Coping with hayfever at any time is bad enough; but it’s all the more difficult when you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, and perhaps experiencing an increased sensitivity to allergens as a result. You want something that will give you effective relief from the symptoms, but you don’t want to use anything that might harm your baby. And for many, finding a drug-free answer is crucial. In the 1980’s our MD’s pregnant sister Vivienne asked her doctor about the safety of using drugs, including antihistamines, during pregnancy. She was told very firmly that the most important thing was that she had a stress free pregnancy, so taking the occasional painkiller, for example, to relieve a headache, would do no harm. However, on the question of antihistamines, the only advice was that there was no evidence to suggest that the antihistamines available were safe or unsafe. A great deal has changed since the 1980’s, particularly in the area of ante- and post-natal advice, but the medical evidence regarding the use of antihistamines has hardly changed at all:

According to the NHS website, if you wish to take antihistamines, your doctor is most likely to prescribe you one of the ‘second generation’ – that is, non-sedating – antihistamines. These include loratadine (Claritin), and cetirizine (Zyrtec). What About Diet?
Diet can play a huge part in how your body copes with allergic reactions. Here is a list of dietary suggestions. These are not pregnancy specific suggestions, and we recommend that you follow your health professional’s advice on diet during pregnancy.
- Oranges, grapefruits, red apples, watermelon, orange and yellow pepper all contain beta carotene, which is high in vitamin C and flavanoids, they are said to be good for preparing your body and fighting off hayfever symptoms.
- Dark green vegetables are also high in beta carotene and help to cleanse the bowel. Try watercress, rocket, spinach, broccoli, green beans, kale, nettles and seaweed.
- Sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds have beneficial properties too. Sprinkle on salads and vegetables.
- Garlic can help to reduce excess catarrh. Eat two raw cloves a day (you can cook them in food) or take a garlic supplement.
- Processed foods – avoid pre-packaged foods as much as possible, especially foods containing additives including e numbers.
